09.25.2012 / DIY : Mini Tassel Garland

I made these mini tassels for La La’s new room and they have been a big hit.  They couldn’t be easier to make and I thought I’d share how.  Because if I (the craft challenged girl) can make these, anybody can.

Here is what you’ll need . . .

1 : : Pretty string – you’ll need 2 per tassel  (you can find this type of string at craft stores)
2 : : Cardboard – cut the cardboard the length you’d like your tassels to be (mine measures at about 4 1/4)
3 : : Glue Gun

And it goes a little something like this . . .

ONE : : take one end of the string + wrap it around the cardboard (not too tightly) until the entire skein is wrapped around the cardboard.  TWO  : : Add on the 2nd skein the same way you did the first.  THREE : : leave a small tail at the end.  FOUR + FIVE : :  gingerly slip your fingers under the string and remove the cardboard.  SIX : : slip one finger through the top of the loop + wrap the tail around the loop several times.  SEVEN :: leave a small tail which you can then tie into a small loop knot on the back.  EIGHT : :  glue the knot on the backside to secure the hold.  NINE  : : after the glue has dried, cut through the loop at the very bottom to make the fringe. TEN: : voila!!

Then hang it up like this and pat yourself on the back:

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the overwhelming response I received last week for La La’s Room Reveal.  I thought I’d share a few more pictures that didn’t make the the cut (you can see the original post with more photos, right here) just for fun.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about different pieces throughout the room.  Most of the main pieces are from Serena & Lily, The Land of Nod and Ikea.  I, of course, picked up a little of this and little of that from here and there and everywhere.  But, I should mention that I sourced quite a bit from local flea markets and antique stores.  In fact, the antlers (which have been painted), the bed side tables, the desk, the chair (by the desk) are all thrifted (along with a bunch of other little knick-knacks such as the rad unicorn that dances around in our video).  Probably my favorite part of putting a room together is the little knick-knacks and statement pieces.  I love hunting for them.  You just never know what you will find.   What about you, what is your favorite thing to shop for when decorating a room?

If there is any item you have a question about please don’t hesitate to ask and I’ll be happy to answer.  And if you haven’t seen the video of the room re-design you can watch it here.

I’l be sharing one final post next week which will be a tutorial of the little fringe tassels hanging over the dresser….so stay tuned.

09.04.2012 / la la’s room reveal

I am beyond excited to share with you La La’s new room – completed in all of its cuteness.  If you are a regular around here than you know this is a project I’ve been working on for sometime.

A huge thank you to the following sponsors:
Serena & Lily / Hanging Rattan Chair / French Ring Sheets / Quilt / Euro Sham
The Land of Nod / Modern Clip Gold Desk Lamp / Dot Sheets / Pear Print / Circle + Triangle Garland
Shop Pretty Mommy / Areaware Bin
Berlin Strasse / Alarm clock

Even better than just sharing some photos of the room, I am thrilled to share a video of the room re-design.  I collaborated with Corbyn of Frank and Harvey and, let me tell you, they are genius at what they do – you’ll see what I mean (+ keep an eye out because you’ll be seeing a lot more of their work on the interwebs).   This video is a first for la la LOVELY but definitely not a last.  ENJOY!

Now, I do feel the need to confess.  Here goes . . . before this room, I have never fully decorated an entire space to completion.  I’m “a little here and a little there” kind of gal.  I start with gusto in one room and fizzle out in an entirely different room.

The other thing, you should know, is that this home of mine is the very same home I grew up in.  It’s very magical, yes, but it also presents it’s problems.  Like how to make Ella’s room look like Ella’s and not, oh say, my mom and dad’s old room, or my brothers teenage lair (this room has had many occupants + has seen many a makeover).

But today I’m happy to say that  this old room has taken on a bright and cheery look that is both modern and cozy.

I am in the final hours of finishing up la la’s room.  It is looking pretty, rad, if I don’t say so myself.  And this weekend, we will be snapping some photos and even shooting some video (yes, that’s right).

But for now, here is a little sneak peek of a few items that we received from Land of Nod for la la’s room.  I’m totally in love with this gold lamp.  Like, I might steal it for myself in love with it.  It’s so rad! Land of Nod has recently launched a new line and they have some really great stuff.  It’s pretty clear they just get it – good design that is.

P.S.  You can shop this look  →  here + stay tuned next week!!!!

07.25.2012 / Update : la la’s room

So things are really starting to come together for la la’s room.  You can see a small glimpse of the accent wall and…this week happened to be a good mail week as we received the most rad swing chair ever and pretty bedding from Serena & Lily.  I can’t wait to see it all put everything together.

Although I’m using the hanging rattan chair in a childs bedroom, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it in any room of my house.  In fact, I’m kind of wishing it was in my room.   What about you?  Would you put a swing chair inside your house?  I’d love to know how you would incorporate this piece.

P.S.  You can shop this look  → here

I’m kind of in love with Donna Wilson.  I love her simple yet whimsical pieces.  As you know I’m working on la la’s room and I’d love to add a piece or two from Donna Wilson.  I think the “Let’s make a dance poster,” is just too cute and would fit perfectly for Ella as that is what she does all the day long.  Now I just can’t decide if I should go with a cushion or plate?  Which do you like?  I think Ella, has her heart set on that kitty pillow.

More on la la’s room project here.

You guys, I’m working away on la la’s room (a.k.a. Ella’s room).  I’ll be sharing bits and pieces about the room over the coming weeks and then doing a big reveal come mid August.  Just in time for back to school.

Anyhow, see that picture in the top left corner?  I got two of those little tables (you might have seen on my Instagram / @lalalovelythings) at the flea market and I plan to paint them, of course. I’m pretty sure I’m going to do some color blocking, dip dying or whatever this trend is called.  I was thinking of painting the tables white and then a small portion of the leg in pink or orange.  But now I’m thinking of maybe staying really simple?

You can see more on #lalasroom —> here + here.

And speaking of this trend, check out this Ikea table all gussied up.  I cannot seem to find a narrow enough table for my entry and this just might do the trick.

Have you incorporated this trend in your home?  I’d love to know.

05.01.2012 / Help + a Bed

Hi lovelies.  How is this week finding you?  Well, I’ll start with this…  Ella’s room got painted and I’m pretty happy with the results.  We painted most of the room white and then did a design on the main wall using the above colors.  We then painted her powder room pink and the actual bathroom orange.  I think it looks pretty great.

The next step was purchasing the bed. I had known that I wanted the above bed from IKEA as it was modern, feminine and perfect for our budget.  I held off buying it because I thought we would get the room painted first.  Well, Saturday I clicked over to IKEA only to see that the bed had been discontinued.  I kind of had a mini meltdown.  I know that is not a great reason to have a meltdown but it was reason enough for over tired me.  Ughh.

HELP……Have you seen anything similar that does not break the bank?  The thing of it is, I need something with a very low headboard (like above) to show as much of the design on the wall as possible.

On another note,  I also received the lights  in the mail and guess what….I’m returning them.  Major disappointed but they are so not the gold color they appear to be on the website (they are more like a dark bronze).  I think we are going to go with these instead.

Any suggestions, tips or ideas are, as always, totally appreciated.  I’m really trying my best to finish this room (I have a tendency to half decorate and move on to the next room) and I can’t wait to show you all.

You can see more of my ideas and my pinboard for La La’s room here.
